The BMW small 'six' was developed in response to customer demand for more performace in the 3-Series and was announced in September 1977.
BMW exploited the theme cleverly, adding four-door, cabriolet and estate versions and granting 'factory approval' to performance tuners Alpina.
The performance would satisfy the most demanding driver and throughout the 1980s kept the 3-Series BMWs in the forefront of desirable and practical sporting machinery.
