The models covered by this worskhop manual are equipped with either a 1.8L or 1.9L four-cylinder engine or a 2.5L or 2.8L six-cylinder engine. All engines are of the Dual Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) design. These engines feature a computer-controlled ignition system and electronic fuel injection.
Transmissions are either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. Power is transmitted from the transmission to the fully independent rear axle through a two-piece driveshaft. The differential is bolted to a crossmember and drives the wheels through driveaxles equipped with inner and outer constant velocity joints.
The front suspension is of the MacPherson strut design, with the coil spring/shock absorber unit making up the upper suspension link. The rear suspension on all models except the 318ti and the Z3 is of the multi-link design, while the 318ti and the Z3 use a semi-trailing arm setup.
