Description

By: Riccardo Perrone .

The official Birel story began in the Fifties, when Umberto Sala of Lissone, a small provincial town north of Milan, Italy, decided to start building karts similar to those which were being constructed in the United States of America. In just a few years, chassis built by Sala – nicknamed Birel, from which comes the name of the company he founded in September 1961 – distinguished themselves for their engineering and personality. Since then, Birel has won 26 World Championships, an infinity of European titles and numerous Italian honours. It is thanks to Birel that drivers who raced and won with the company were later able to carve brilliant careers for themselves in motor car racing: men from Riccardo Patrese, Keke Rosberg and Stefano Modena to more recent champions, like Mika Hakkinen and Juan Pablo Montoya have allcompeted on Birels.

This book covers with precision and accuracy the four decades of the absorbing racing, human and production history of the most famous Italian kart manufacturer: it is illustrated with a multitude of period and modern photographs, many never previously published, and enriched by the recollections of the protagonists. The book also includes a record of all the Lissone company's world titles.

This is a must-have publication for all enthusiasts, and is, in fact, a rare publication, because it is the only one of its kind in the world of Italian and international karting.
