Repair Manual Introduction
Austin Healey Sprite Mark 1 Workshop Manual has been compiled for the purpose of assisting Austin Distributors and Dealers to service and maintain the Austin-Healey Sprite Mk.l.
Each assembly of the major components is described in detail. In addition, instructions are given for dismantling, assembling and adjusting these assemblies. Use of the correct Service Tools contributes to an effident, economic and profitable repair. References have, therefore, been made to such tools throughout the Manual.
When ordering spares it is imperative that operators use the 'Service Parts List' of the appropriate model and not the Manual. It is emphasised that only B.M.C. Genuine Parts should be used as replacements for components found unfit for further service.
Austin-Healey Sprite Mark I Service Manual is a Brooklands Books reprint of the original publication published by B.M.C. Service Limited.
Engine Description
The overhead valve engine has its four cylinders vertically in line and cast integral with the crankcase. The detachable cylinder head is of cast iron and carries the push rod operated valve gear. Large area water circulating passages and full length water jackets enable the engine to be adequately cooled even under the most arduous operation conditions. Copper-lead plated bearings are utilised in the connecting-rod big end assemblies, thus necessitating complete and clean lubrication at all times, This is ensured by a rotor type oil pump and the provision of a full flow filter. The choice of oils is of great importance and those recommended at the end of this manual have been tested under various running conditions and should be used in accordance with the schedule of regular attentions.
