Nobody, before or since, has achieved the same level of immediacy of writing style as Mel Nichols, wrote Peter Robinson, the acclaimed automotive journalist, in 2011. His Convoy article, telling the breathtaking story of driving a trio of Lamborghinis from Sant'Agata to London, took the genre to its peak. People still quote the first paragraph perfectly.'
That classic driving tale, one that Jeremy Clarkson also admires above all others, is among the 50 stories in And The Revs Keep Rising, the long-awaited collection of Mel Nichols' finest driving pieces from his distinguished 40-year career as a journalist and editor. Nichols is best-known for his editorship of CAR magazine from 1974 to 1981, a period when he, in the words of L.J.K. Setright, brought CAR from notoriety to fame', and half of the stories in this book date from that time.
That era brought a profusion of supercars and Nichols drove them all. Many of the jewels came from Italy, so Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Maseratis — and the people who created them — feature prominently. Among the highlight stories from these years are Mr Ferrari is waiting to see you, an account of an audience in Maranello, and Monaco to Modena — fast, which describes a sensational road trip with Lamborghini engineer Bob Wallace in a Countach LP400.
The range of driving experiences in And The Revs Keep Rising is broad, from track icons such as Jaguar D-type and Ferrari 250 GTO to the author's own MGA 1600 and Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV. German supercars include Porsche 911 Turbo, BMW M1, Porsche 959 and three species of Audi quattro. Among the British greats are Bentley 'R' Type Continental, Aston Martin Volante and McLaren Fl. The story on the Fl — Okay mate, that's probably enough — is published for the first time in And The Revs Keep Rising. The author's formative years in his native Australia are recalled with stories on Holden Monaro GTS 350 and Ford Falcon GT-HO Phase III.
And The Revs Keep Rising puts you in the driving seat of the most exciting cars ever made. Relax and enjoy the ride.
